Stensalen

CLEINT
VIA University College - Design & Business, Herning

PROJECT
Stensalen is located in the historic Angli building in Herning, originally designed by C.F. Møller Architects for Danish industrialist and art collector Aage Damgaard. Today, the building is home to part of VIA University College's textile and design education facilities.

The room is characterised by its original artworks by Danish artist Paul Gadegaard, whose bold geometric compositions and vibrant colours are an integral part of the building's architectural identity.

Today, Stensalen functions as an extension of the university's canteen, offering a flexible setting for dining, informal meetings and social interaction.

The interior design takes a respectful approach to the building's architectural heritage, introducing contemporary elements that improve the functionality of the space without compromising its original character.

To address the challenging acoustics, floor-to-ceiling acoustic curtains have been installed. Their soft texture and neutral colour provide a calm backdrop to the colourful artworks while adding warmth and improving acoustic comfort.

The furniture selection combines historical references with new, custom-made elements. Arne Jacobsen tables have been reintroduced, reflecting the original furniture used when the factory first opened.

The existing Series 7 chairs have been retained and reused, supporting a resource-conscious approach to the refurbishment. A long, bespoke wooden table introduces a natural material contrast and creates a central gathering point.

The carefully selected pendant lights, with their soft, rounded forms, complement the furniture and architectural proportions without drawing attention away from the artworks. Together, the furniture, lighting and textile elements create a cohesive and functional interior that respects the building's architectural and artistic heritage while accommodating its contemporary educational use.
